I first saw a Nigerian dwarf when I was at the State 4-H Show in Flemington about ten years ago. I hadn't known they existed. I remember thinking, 'well, isn't that interesting', but was still into my Nubians at the time.
I kept thinking about these little goats, and arranged a field trip of our 4-H club to visit Katrene Johnson, Unicorn Farm, who was a Nigerian Dwarf breeder in a near-by town. This got me even more interested.
Then a few weeks later we saw an ad in the paper for Nigerian Dwarf kids for sale, and my daughter, Diane, asked me if we could go look. We went and she fell in love with a tiny black doe. We purchased Gumdrop for her, and were enjoying her.
Then Katrene Johnson called and said that she was reducing her herd, and was GIVING away does for free to 4-Hers. I got a doe, and quite a few kids in the 4-H project got does, and things kind of took off from there. I then realized that the bucks were small and I could handle having a couple of them on my property, and that it was a lot more fun to have my own bucks than to depend on someone else.
As I found out more about the breed, I realized what an exciting time it was to be involved with a new breed of goats, as now is the time the breed has been developed and evolved to what it is today. And of course, there is nothing cuter than a Nigerian Dwarf kid. Diane really gave us the push to get started by asking for a little Nigerian Dwarf.
Now it is eight years later, and we are still having fun!
